Angioplasty

Angioplasty is a medical procedure used to widen narrowed or blocked arteries, typically those supplying blood to the heart (coronary arteries), but it can also be performed in other arteries of the body.

Symptoms that may indicate a need for angioplasty include chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, fatigue, or heart attack symptoms like chest discomfort, sweating, nausea, or lightheadedness.

Preventative measures for arterial blockages involve lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, managing stress, and controlling conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

Angioplasty is often performed as an emergency procedure during a heart attack or as a planned procedure to relieve symptoms of angina or improve blood flow to the heart muscle.

During angioplasty, a catheter with a deflated balloon at its tip is threaded through blood vessels to the blocked artery. The balloon is then inflated to compress the plaque against the artery walls, widening the artery and restoring blood flow.

In some cases, a stent—a small mesh tube—is inserted to keep the artery open and prevent it from narrowing again.
